A partnership effort in the making
TEAMWORK
Marlon Molina, Director of Escuela Biblica Honduras, Wilmer Espinoza, Director of Journey, David Chacon, Director of LDI-Vo-Ag, Mario Alfaro, Jorge Vargas, Marel Bados and a score of local and regional leaders all over 4 departments (states) are working together to have access and organize a relief effort in case the situation after Hurricane Felix worsen.
So far it is our understanding that rainfall has been constant in the North Coast and that and that many Christians all over Honduras are praying that nothing regrettable happens. In Trujillo and Olancho people are monitoring the news in hope of understanding the progress of the storm.
Here in the USA we are trying to put together a response team that would allow us to respond in case the need arise. So far EBH, LDI, MdC, together with some individuals such as Ron Carter, Wayne Gains, Steve Edelhuber and Norberto Otero has been in communication, but we hope to add more people to the network as well as any congregation or program willing to join us. We are blessed to have Mision del Caribe in our team. This organization has plenty of experience in responding to disasters in Central and South America in the past.

A report from Fox news describes the situation as “a record-setting Category 5 storm Tuesday, whipping metal rooftops through the air like razors and forcing thousands to flee.” A Red Cross official, Claudio Vanegas said by phone “The winds are horrible,” from the Nicaraguan town of Puerto Cabezas shortly after Felix struck land nearby with 160 mph winds. “They send roofs flying through the air, so we aren’t going outside because it is too dangerous.” This is of course the effect of the direct hit, but the most fearful effect is the 24 inches rainfall expected to be at the mountains of Nicaragua and Honduras.
Felix landed around dawn, destroying many homes. “There are some that are nothing more than a few remaining walls,” he said.
It is interesting to know that “Only 31 Category 5 storms have been seen in the Atlantic since record-keeping began in 1886, including eight in the last five seasons.” Also it is worth to note that “Never before in recorded hurricane history have two Category 5 Atlantic hurricanes made landfall in the same year.”
In these days of record setting storms we do not want to ignore the ever present danger that many of our beloved brothers and sister are exposed together with the rest of Honduras. 1998’s Hurricane Mitch killed many thousands; we truly hope all life is spear. But in case the storm takes a toll on these poor countries we need your help and commitment to assist the relief efforts.
Ron Carter. MdC Update
Tuesday at 2:27 pm. Yesterday we positioned $5,000 of MDC and EBH funds to be transferred to Honduras for use as seed money to respond to the disaster that this hurricane will surely become. We put $1,000 in Wilmer’s account, $2,000 in the Jutiquile account, and $2000 in an account for Carlos Martinez in San Pedro Sula. I am not sure what use they will make of the funds, but I am sure they will use it judiciously. Wayne and I have discussed the need to watch this situation closely and to determine if there is more we can and should do. I am sure they will be a need for much, much more in the way of funding. We need to determine what role we all want to play, if any.
